The Day the Black Marker Found Its RAINBOW
The book began as an activity that Dr. Kelley launched with her Lower 
School students. It then became a book manuscript that the 8th grade 
students edited and suggested changes. And then…the art! Mrs. 
Knappenberger chose her 6th grade artists to illustrate this book because 
this story lives in the space between childhood imagination and growing 
self-awareness - exactly where sixth graders stand. At that age, students 
are beginning to notice differences, question assumptions, and express big feelings with bold 
honesty. On each page, the black marker is seen through the eyes and imagination of a 6th grader. And just like 
people, black markers may share similarities - they are all “black markers” -  but they are not identical. They vary in 
shape, style, personality, purpose, and expression. This book embraces that diversity. The many versions of the black 
marker reflect the many ways we show up in the world. It is an inclusive celebration of individuality, creativity, and 
belonging - reminding us that even when we share a name, we each carry our own story.
Watching young artists transform a picture book into an immersive visual experience is a great joy. Sixth grade 
illustrators had the courage to put their imagination on display. This is why giving students authentic creative work 
matters. Sometimes a little tear, a little curiosity, and a black marker are all it takes to reveal a rainbow. 
The Day the Black Marker Found Its Rainbow is available for sale. All proceeds from sales are donated to the EduGift 
program which provides books for students in need.
