Kindness in Action: The Kind Kids Initiative
While understanding emotions is essential, SEL at our
school goes a step further—turning values into action.
The Kind Kids initiative, a cornerstone of the 5th grade
experience, challenges students to actively build a more
compassionate community.
Croswell describes its purpose simply: “It teaches
students to live with purpose by uplifting others and
recognizing that when we lead with kindness, we
strengthen our entire community.”
The program follows a three-step process: Learn, Act,
Reflect. Students explore empathy through discussions
and journaling, carry out student-led kindness projects
across campus, and then reflect on their impact.
This structure helps transform kindness into a daily habit.
“This process helps make kindness a consistent, lived
practice,” Croswell explains, “and part of daily school
life.”
The results are tangible. Members of the community
report feeling more seen, supported, and included—and
students themselves are helping drive that change.
Students use Post-It Notes to Fill
the hallways and shared spaces with
encouraging messages, reminding the
community that small acts of kindness
matter.

          The most meaningful
growth happens when students
realize the impact of their work
not just through planning
kindness, but by hearing how
their actions help others feel
special, included, and valued.
Those moments of connection
are where real learning lives.
