In educating students in mind, body, and spirit, St. Michael’s provides a variety of programs for developing and sustaining physical health, including physical education classes as part of the grade-level curriculums in our Lower and Upper School, and interscholastic athletics and intramural sports for students in grades 4-8.
Intramural Sports
Fourth- and fifth-grade students interested in learning the fundamentals of team sports and further developing their physical fitness are eligible to participate in intramural sports in three seasons throughout the academic year. Each of the three intramural seasons runs concurrently with each of the three academic trimesters—in fall, winter, and spring—and each lasts approximately six weeks. The fall intramural season is dedicated to co-ed flag football and co-ed soccer; the winter intramural season is dedicated to co-ed basketball and co-ed volleyball; and the spring intramural season is dedicated to endurance training and middle-distance running.
Middle School Athletics
Students in good standing in grades six, seven, and eight are eligible to participate in competitive, interscholastic team sports in three seasons throughout the year. A number of local private and charter schools along with St. Michael’s School form the Tucson Interscholastic Athletic League (TIAL), which offers competitive play in fall, winter, and spring sports—co-ed flag football and volleyball, girls’ and boys’ basketball, and co-ed soccer, respectively.
The St. Michael’s interscholastic athletics teams abide by a no-cut policy, giving athletes of all levels the opportunity to play and compete as a member of a team. While our athletes perform at a high level in most team sports, typically winning one or more TIAL titles each year, we emphasize good sportsmanship, commitment to team, and individual perseverance above all.
