On behalf of the Board of Trustees of St. Michael’s School and the Vestry of St. Michael and All Angels Church, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Matthew Teller as the next Head of School for St. Michael’s School.

Matthew Teller

Dr. Teller has been a member of the St. Michael’s community for many years – as a parent of two St. Michael’s graduates, a former Associate Head of School, a former Director of Enrollment, and a member of the faculty for several years. He brings prior Head of School experience, significant admissions and administrative leadership experience, and a deep understanding of the academic, operational, spiritual, and cultural life of St. Michael’s.  His history and experience with independent schools in the Tucson area is especially valuable in the current environment.

Dr. Teller has dedicated more than 25 years to working in Tucson’s independent schools. Before joining St. Michael’s, he taught Spanish and served as Upper School Principal and later as Head of School at Green Fields Country Day School. He then spent four years teaching Spanish at The Gregory School before coming to St. Michael’s.  Dr. Teller holds a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition and an M.A. in Spanish Linguistics, both from the University of Arizona, as well as a B.S. in Psychology from Georgetown University.

In his free time, Dr. Teller enjoys spending time outdoors and playing his mandolin with Tucson’s bluegrass community.

The Head of School search process has been deliberate and grounded in the mission and values of St. Michael’s. In partnership with The Education Group, a nationally respected consulting firm with deep expertise in independent and Episcopal school leadership transitions, the Search Committee concluded a thorough a comprehensive and inclusive search process.

Throughout the process, the committee remained focused on identifying the leader best positioned to guide the school through its next chapter — academically, operationally, spiritually, and institutionally. Following a formal interview and deliberation process, the committee concluded that Dr. Teller is the right person to lead St. Michael’s at this important moment in the school’s history.

The Position Statement outlines the core mission, strengths, and opportunities, as well as the qualifications and qualities that the next Head of School embodies.
