As part of our May Social Emotional Learning (SEL) theme of Transitions and Reflections, students recently participated in a School Counseling SEL lesson from The Responsive Counselor focused on giving and receiving compliments.
Students explored how compliments can strengthen friendships, build confidence, and create a more positive and connected classroom community. We also discussed the importance of “inside compliments” — compliments that recognize a person’s character, actions, effort, or kindness rather than appearance alone. Many students benefit from explicitly learning how to both give and receive meaningful compliments in thoughtful and authentic ways.
To conclude the lesson, students participated in a “compliment web” activity. Sitting together in a circle, students passed a ball of yarn to one another while sharing words of appreciation such as, “Thank you for being a good friend,” or “Thank you for helping me when I needed it.” As the web grew, students could visually see the connections and support that exist within their classroom community.
This meaningful activity encouraged reflection, kindness, and connection as students prepare for end-of-year transitions and celebrate the relationships they have built throughout the school year.
