A Cross-Grade Journey in Art, Science, and Storytelling
At St. Michael’s, innovation often begins with curiosity—and sometimes even with a simple black marker. This year, our fourth and eighth graders are collaborating on a unique, cross-grade, multidisciplinary project that brings science, art, and storytelling together in one creative journey.
The project began with an imaginative idea from our fourth graders: What if a black magic marker discovered that it already carried every color of the rainbow inside of it? Guided by this question, students explored the science behind color and light, and then worked together to write a whimsical narrative that captures both the wonder of discovery and the beauty of imagination.
Their story has now been handed over to our eighth-grade artists, who are using their talents to bring the narrative to life visually. With vibrant illustrations inspired by both scientific principles and artistic creativity, the book is taking shape as a true collaboration across grade levels and disciplines.
This innovative project not only integrates writing, art, and science, but also nurtures community and connection between younger and older students. Fourth graders gain confidence seeing their words come to life, while eighth graders practice leadership and artistic interpretation, honoring the vision of their younger peers.
The finished book will debut during our Love of Reading Week in April, where the story of the black magic marker—and the rainbow within—will be shared and celebrated by our entire school community.
At St. Michael’s, we believe innovation flourishes when students learn to see connections between disciplines, work together across ages, and imagine beyond the ordinary. This project is a joyful reminder that when creativity and collaboration meet, the results are truly colorful.
